Gryffe Camera Club likes to think of itself as a friendly sociable camera club who doesn’t take itself too seriously. We all love our photography and strive to improve our techniques and photographs but we also like to share our expertise and knowledge with each other - after all photography is meant to be fun and that usually means spending time with others with a similar interest.

We meet at 7:30pm on most Wednesday nights at the Carrick Centre in Houston where there is usually either an invited speaker, a competition evening or some other activity to stimulate our interest.

We also run workshop groups which meet separately to advance their knowledge in one particular aspect of photography. Last year we had workshop groups on Basic Techniques, Portrait, Landscape and Macro photography. They typically meet once per month at a variety of venues.

The club competitions, both internal and external are a great way to see other people’s work and hear informed criticism about them. We strongly urge all our members to support the club by submitting photographs to our internal competitions and coming along to the external competition nights either at the Carrick Centre or other advertised venues - this way you will gain an invaluable insight into what turns a good photograph into a great photograph and also help promote our club to a wider audience!!

Our History

Gryffe Camera Club was founded in 1986, started by a small group of photographers who had recently completed an evening course in photography at Craigends School in Linwood. In that first year it joined the GDPU and the SPF in 1987.

The club's first darkroom was a garden shed erected by the club in Craigends School. 1988 saw the club move to St. Conval's School in Linwood and soon after another move to Gryffe High School. Yet another move followed in 1991, this time to Johnstone Community Halls and during the first season in the Halls, Gryffe won the GDPU Inter-Club Slide Competition and hosted the Renfrewshire Competition.

1992-93 saw Gryffe retaining the GDPU slide trophy and with 45 members the expanding club's need for a darkroom became more and more pressing. Early in1993 the Community Council acquired the Old School in Houston and Gryffe CC became a partner in the development of the building for community use. Funds for kitting out a darkroom were successfully gained and by November 1994 all of the capital items had been purchased and the Old School had become the permanent home that the Club had long required. The following session, 1995-96, saw Gryffe CC lift the GDPU slide trophy for the third in the club’s first ten years.

In recent years the club has played an important part in the local community, supporting Summer Fetes and organising a highly successful annual inter-schools photography competition. The acquisition a few years ago of computing equipment through a Lottery Grant has widened the range of the Club's activities and its thriving membership of over 50 workers has a good range of ages and experience.

A second major Lottery Grant has seen the club move forward in the digital photography area and we are now introducing a Projected Digital Image Section.

Scottish Photography Competition 2009 - British Waterways Scotland’s annual photography competition has a new look for 2009! There are now a number of categories to enter with exciting new prizes on offer as well as the first ever mobile phone competition.

This years Worldwide Photowalk is on the 18th July. Find out what a Photowalk is all about here. Some of you might remember that Bill won the Glasgow event last year. Wildlife Photographer of the Year. The Scotland Street museum is hosting the exhibition of the winning and commended entries from the “2008 Wildlife Photographer of the Year” competition from 21st March – 14th June.

Gryffe Camera Club will be holding informal outdoor meetings over the summer months. We will meet on Wednesdays, at the Carrick Hall in Houston for a prompt 7.00pm departure. Tips for an Easy Life in your Photography

Below are Bill’s notes from last week.

What are A members and B members?

A section are workers who have achieved a standard in the B section that indicated that they should move into the A section.

This is probably that they won the B section or the standard of their work was so good that the committee felt that they should move up.

Some A section workers placed themselves straight into that group when they joined as they felt that they can compete at that level.

The A section are members who are expected to produce exceptional work for competitions (internal and external) and can be expected to offer advice to those in the B section on how to improve.

What is the best camera

All cameras are good and the more you understand what it does and how you can ‘alter’ it the more it will be capable of.

Did your read the instruction book? Where is your instruction book?

I would predict that any camera that we use today that has more than 3 mega pixels should be capable of producing work of the required standards. It’s the photographer that makes the difference!

Things to consider – BEFORE – you press the shutter button

1. Do you know the theme, main subject, and compositional elements of the photo?

2. Is the quality and direction of light acceptable?

3. Do you know what you’re metering?

4. Is shutter speed important?

5. Is depth-of-field important?

6. Is the entire scene at the same plane of focus?

Software

Regardless of PhotoShop versions and types – you can easily produce all your work using Picasa 3.8 – free from Google - http://picasa.google.com/

You probably also have software that came with your camera?

Effects Filters

HDR Topaz etc… are not needed to produce a great image. They are enhancement tools and should be used sparingly.

Your Workflow is?

Your digital workflow is important! It means that you can enjoy your photography rather than becoming a slave to the computer.

My one is as follows:

The Computer has only programs on the c:\ drive

All work is stored on an external USB drive called P:\

There is also another external USB drive called Q:\ on which there is an exact copy of P: (backed up once a week!)

This means that if (or when) the computer should fail then it is so easy to move to another machine or a re-built version of your own and lose nothing! Programs can always be re-installed – your images need to be kept safe!

Free back up software –SyncToy 2.1 – free from Microsoft

Also very good practice to have an ‘image’ of your C: drive made so that you can always go back to when the machine was last working properly.

Norton Ghost or similar…an image is not a copy – it includes all the hidden files and codes that make your machine work.

I always download straight from the camera by following the instructions that came with it.

I only clear the card AFTER the copy has been made to P: and Q: - I always have 2 copies of all my work.

Working on the image:

I generally use the following…

Open the image and immediately save as a new name – usually the file name then what I plan it to become – e.g. img0123_A4print.jpg
Straighten
Crop / size the image
Fix the levels – the histogram
Sharpen
Save

Printing

I always use the original inks that are for my printer – no compatibles are considered.

Paper – the club has a book that shows what members have tried over the years and what printer was used. Have a look.

Eliz, Maureen and myself went along to the December meeting of Dioparama. They were having an internal competition and there were about 10 av’s shown. The winner was a documentary style show about a Greenock Tugboat which sank a couple of years ago. Great photography with a narration over the top – a different style of av to what we have seen before. Well worth going along.

9th November 2009
I went along to the monthly meeting of Dioparama to see how the experts do it. The first half was a tutorial about Audacity – used for editing and sequencing audio together. Second half was Hugh Kerr showing off 4 of his recent AV’s. Really inspiring – and good use of music and sound effects.

Bill, Eliz, Jack and myself met last night at my house to have our first AV Group meeting. Bill brought round his projector and we went through some of the options available, techniques and Bill showed us some av presentations he has produced.

Bill's opinion is that the program Pictures to Exe is the best. It is simple and powerful, easily customisable and produces the crispest and best quality shows. Bill took us through the process of putting together a short sequence of sound effects which will come in handy when putting our av's together.

I was thinking that we could all have an attempt at an individual, short av (1-2 mins) to get the basics together before the next group meeting. I am sure that once we try and put something together there will be a lot of questions that we can help one another with.

Gryffe Camera Club Social and Prize Giving

The annual prize giving and social evening will be held in the Carrick Centre on Wed 27^th May 2009 at 7.30pm.
This will be our last indoor meeting of the session, and is a great chance to enjoy a full evening of chat, laughter and music, and a delicious buffet – all for £5 per head. Bring your own drinks and glasses – unless you enjoy drinking out of polystyrene cups!
Please bring your fiver along to the AGM on 20^th, to secure your place at the buffet - we need to know by then how many we are catering for.
If you are the holder of a trophy, please ensure that you bring it to the AGM – or get it to Roger ASAP - so that it can be presented to this year’s winner at the social.
I hope to see you all at the AGM and social.

The Gryffe Camera Club bus trip went very well this year.

It was to the Crinan Canal and it catered for all interests. Those who wanted to cycle it took their bikes, those who wanted to walk it were dropped off at Cairnbaan or Bellanoch to make their own way to Crinan. Others stayed on the bus to Crinan where a boating festival was taking place. There was the ‘standard issue’ Gryffe CC rain shower, which added to the fun.

The Clyde Puffer Vic 32 was giving free sailings around Loch Crinan every half hour too – plenty of thick black smoke! You could also ‘hurl a haggis’ into the sea as one of the sports. There was something for everyone and we all had a great day out.

The evening was an enjoyable one with six people attending.
The conditions were reasonable for taking photographs although not great, the water was lovely and still but light was not that good, however some good pics were still taken. The swans got a lot of attention and a few gulls.
Later the sky cleared and we moved to Barrmeadow loch where we stayed till 10.30 as the light was much better taking Lanscapes and sunsets.

Every year we run workshop groups which meet separately to advance their knowledge in one particular aspect of photography. 2008/09 had Workshop Groups on Basic Techniques, Portrait, Landscape and Pet/Wildlife photography.
They typically tried to meet once per month at a variety of venues.

Lomond landscapes photography competition

The Lennox Herald has teamed up with Loch Lomond Shores to invite readers to get snapping and take advantage of all our beautiful local scenery to create their very own work of art in the form of a landscape photograph.
As well as providing entrants with the opportunity to showcase their talent, we’re also offering a great cash prize for this exciting competition.
All entrants will have their photograph displayed at Loch Lomond Shores throughout April and May and a selection of photographs will also be published in The Lennox Herald.
There are two categories for entries: The under 16 years old category and the adult category. The prize for the under 16 category is £100 and for the adult category the prize is £100. Winners will also have their photograph published in The Lennox Herald and become part of a permanent photography feature at Loch Lomond Shores.
So if you want to share your favourite landscape photographs with other local people, simply send a good quality print of your entry to:

Terms and conditions

This competition is for amateur photographers only.
Entries should be no larger than A3 in size
Subject matter should be local landscapes ie. Within West Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute council areas. There are no further restrictions to encourage diversity of entrant’s photographs.
Given the nature of this competition, the landscape should be the focus and figures within the composition should be restricted to those that offer perspective.
All photographs should clearly display name, address, contact numbers/email addresses and category for entry on the reverse.
Entrants who require their photographs to be returned should include a stamped addressed envelope with their entry.
Winning entries will be selected week commencing 1^st May and winners will be notified shortly thereafter.
Whilst we would like to offer thanks and provide feedback to all entrants, we are unable to respond directly to individual entrants other than those who submit the winning entries.

Gryffe Camera Club Outing - Saturday 4th July 2009

We are off to the Crinan Canal for this years Summer outing. Here is the proposed itinerary. The bus is free to members and non-members will be £8 each.

8.00 Kilmacolm Cross

8.10 BoW Car Park

8.20 Carrick Centre

8:30 Georgetown Road to Erskine Bridge

10.45 (estimated) Inveraray - 15 min stop

11.00 (estimated) depart Inveraray

11.45 (estimated) Cairnbaan - disembark if planning to be involved in lock duties or cyling/walking to Crinan (4.5 miles)

Bellanoch – disembark if walking to Crinan (2 miles)

12.10 (estimated) – Crinan

Crinan Classic Boat Festival is on - an informal celebration of wooden boats, with events for all. The smaller, slower boats will be racing around markers within Loch Crinan, providing spectators ashore with a beautiful spectacle of fine vessels. The larger boats will be racing around some of the same marks but also into Loch Craignish & the Sound of Jura.

Highland Games. A chance for all to take part & let their hair down! Rowing races, row boat tug-o-war, haggis hurling & more.

The Puffer VIC 32 will be doing two-hour boat trips from the pier in Crinan.

Four P2000 Navy Patrol Boats will be open for the public to have guided tours.

The Crinan Hotel & Coffee Shop are right in the centre of the village. The Hotel has a couple of bars & restaurants, but suggest bringing packed lunches & snacks as Hotel will be very busy. The canal basin at Crinan near where the Crinan Canal enters Loch Crinan & the open sea is a delightful place. Here you can wander along a network of paths, lock gates, towpaths & shoreline, simply enjoying this stunning location.

Harbour - Here there is a pier & the sheltered moorings of an impressive collection of craft, all overlooked by a line of cottages. So, plenty of great photo opportunities.
